Julia Schuster is an interdisciplinary artist from Vienna, Austria, currently based in the Gothenburg region, Sweden.
Her artistic practice is characterized by clay and ceramic installations that seamlessly blend with photography, video performances, and written compositions in the form of letters, poems, and artists' books. In her work, she explores the intricate connections between soil, the human body and emotional landscapes, which increasingly take shape as site-specific artworks. The intimate quality of her art offers an experiential dimension designed to provide the audience with comfort, embrace and space for introspection.
She is a graduate from the Royal College of Art Ceramics and Glass MA programme (2016) and holds a BA degree in Design from the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in Italy (2013). Selected exhibitions include the Goheung Buncheong Culture Museum (South Korea), Oyoun (Berlin), Röda Sten Konsthall (Sweden), the Göteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (Extended Program), Palinsesti (Italy), the British Ceramics Biennial, and Photo Kathmandu. Julia has undertaken residencies in Denmark, Nepal, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Since 2019 she is an elected member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC).
